Why You’re Always Tired (And How To Fix It For Good)

Are you more than tired? Is every day a fight to get up because you’re down-right exhausted? Maybe it doesn’t matter how much sleep you get, you still feel awful and nod off after lunch. Or, even though you’re so tired you could cry, you’re too wired to fall asleep at bedtime. For months your head pounds, your muscles ache and your legs feel like concrete blocks. It’s time to face facts– your groove is gone.

If you’ve been battling extreme levels of low energy and can barely get going in the morning, you might have more than just burnout. It might be chronic fatigue. Affecting more than 1 million Americans, more people have this debilitating condition than those suffering multiple sclerosis, lupus, and many types of cancer. It’s reaching epidemic levels!

And the worst part? Doctors are still not taking this condition seriously. Women are being told their exhaustion is because, “you’re a busy mom,” “you’re depressed,” or “you’re not getting any younger.” Armed with a prescription pad and pen, you’re sent on your way with medications to suppress the symptoms (not heal the root cause of the issue).

However, if you suspect you have generalized fatigue or the more serious chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), it’s vital you dig to the root of the problem. Beyond the unpleasant, painful and uncomfortable symptoms of chronic fatigue, the condition is dangerous; approximately 20% of car accidents are caused by driver fatigue.

Don’t brush off your tiredness as a side-effect of aging or a busy lifestyle. It’s not normal to wake up every day feeling tired and lousy. Plus, it affects every part of your life. Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to shake off the fatigue and re-energize your body so you’re free to live your best life.

Get Better Shut Eye

It may seem like a statement from Captain Obvious, but improving your sleep quality will go a long way to eliminate fatigue. Your body needs 7-9 hours of sleep with regular REM cycles to repair and restore itself properly. To do that, go to bed at the same time every night. Shut off all electronics (including the phone and Netflix!) an hour before bed. Drink a warm cup of chamomile tea, or try an herbal remedy like Valerian Root.

Give You Body The Nutrients It Needs

With today’s Western diet, millions of Americans are malnourished– despite overeating calories. Without the right nutrients your body can’t function the way it was meant to, and it upsets the delicate balance of bacteria in your gut. Gut health is crucial for your overall health. It plays an important role in building a strong immune system, balancing your hormones, and absorbing the nutrients your body needs to perform complex biochemistry. Some of the most common nutrient deficiencies that cause chronic fatigue are iron, magnesium, vitamin D, B, and A. A simple blood test will alert you to the nutrients you’re missing so you can add them back through whole foods or supplementation. Plus, cutting out processed foods, trans fats, food additives, refined sugars and excess sugar will fortify your health by keeping your gut happy.

It’s A Hormone Thing

Hormones rule– literally. Your body’s system depends on the proper functioning of your hormones. When even one hormone level is off-kilter, it creates a domino effect that impacts your day-to-day life. Two hormone pathways that can cause chronic fatigue are the thyroid, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal gland (the system responsible for adrenal fatigue). Why would these hormones stop functioning properly? There’s multiple, complicated reasons that need to be explored with a functional medicine physician. When your hormones are balanced, you’ll know– you’ll have a steady amount of energy to get through the day (and you’ll feel fabulous)!

But these are only a few of the culprits that may be stealing your energy. This isn’t a complete list. However, With a thorough consultation, testing, and a personalized plan, chronic fatigue can be solved so you get your life back. The root cause of your fatigue is as unique as you are– and a “one-size-fits-all” approach to beating it won’t work.
